Upon a Roadway Lost

Upon a Roadway Lost

A poem by Sydney Stone. I do not own the image.

For the unclaimed pups I have seen, left on roadsides, that deserved far better.

***

Trained to trust,

Born to run,

Where did you go-

To have your fun?

Why did you leave-

That fateful day?

Leaving your poor, little body,

On display.

Did you trust-

The passing cars?

Did you greet them-

With excited barks?

When you were hit,

I hope that it was quick,

No life-to-death buffer,

Amidst which you’d suffer.

And though I miss you now-

Far more than a smidge,

I know that we will see each other again,

Across the Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you. I have a long drive to work every day through an expanse of farm country and there have been two dogs bodies on the side of the road every day for the past couple of weeks, one couldn’t have been more than a few months old, and I just felt the need to honor them as whomever owned them has not sought them out to reclaim them.

what a great but disturbing story; I love your concept of ‘honoring’; I like your material which is why I have subscribed; visit my site now and then; I would be interested in your ‘read’ —

The contrast between “Trained to trust” and “Born to run” already hints at tragedy, and by the time you get to “Leaving your poor, little body, on display,” it’s just devastating. 💔

The question: “Did you trust the passing cars?” 😪

It’s raw, it’s real, and it absolutely made me feel. I have fur baby’s so it hit especially hard reading this.💔

Thank you, I do as well, and it always breaks my heart to think of them alone before I adopted them. I am so thankful that they were picked up by animal control, or a kind passerby, and were thus sparred the fate of those pups I have seen on roadsides.
