A poem by Sydney Stone. I do not own the image.
***
In a dim room, I sat with you,
No one else,
Just us two.
You looked like you had had a few,
I could not judge,
For I had too.
I looked at you,
You met my eye,
A tear-drop fell,
It drowned the lie,
I had ready,
On my tongue,
Your breathing ragged,
Your hand was steady,
On the glass,
From which you sipped.
Through soundless lips,
I meant to say,
How sorry I was,
To make you stay.
But as you turned,
Away from me,
No words came,
My knees went weak.
I could not follow,
As you left,
The weight was too heavy,
Within my chest.
For long hours I waited,
Eyes on the door,
But you were gone,
Evermore.
